R-22 refrigerant has been phased out because it is harmful to the environment, and its production is banned in the United States and most other countries. As a result, repairs on systems that use R-22 are becoming increasingly expensive. Due to the age of these systems, there is also a higher risk of unexpected breakdowns, especially if a refrigerant leak is present. While there are limited options to temporarily extend the life of an R-22 system, these solutions are short-term. In many cases, replacing the system is more cost-effective, and ultimately, replacement is unavoidable.
